The Battle of Antietam
The Battle of Antietam started on September 17, 1862 in Antietam Creek, Maryland. The battle started when the Confederate side invaded Maryland to try to make it a part of the confederate.
Who Fought The Battle?
The battle was fought between Generals Robert E. Lee and George B. McClellan. Robert E. Lee fought for the south going into the battle he had about 30,000 men. While George B. McClellan fought for the north he had 40,000 men. Even though the number of people they had was far apart the battle was still close but in the end the Union came out victorious.
Until these day this battle was the bloodiest day to happen in U.S soil around 36,000 people perished in the battle field. Of those men 15,000 were from the Confederate and 21,000 were from the Union. This battle is also called the Sharpsburg Battle because that's where the creek is.
The significance of this battle is that when the Union won President Abraham Lincoln passed the Emancipation Proclamation. With out the Unions' win the act of passing The Emancipation Proclamation would have look like a desperate move to end the war.
