Battle of Atlanta

In a small sothern town 70,000 troops fought desperately, brother agains brother, to decide the nation's fate.This significant battle was fought southeast of Atlanta, but it was mainly fought for control of Atlanta, Georgia. This battle was not a one day affair, but involved many soldiers and alot of moving around. It started on july 20, 1864 and lasted till September 1, 1864 when the Union Army eventually claimed a victory.

The two main generals in this battle were Confederate General, John Bell Hood, and Union General, William Tecumseh Sherman. The Union Forces went in with around 15,000-30,000 soldiers and suffered casualties of 7,407 (5,496 Killed and Wounded; 1,911 Missing). The Confederate forces averaged around 12,000-40,000 and suffered ssevere casualties of 16,525 (15,325 Killed and Wounded; 1,200 Missing). It was one of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War. It contained hours after hours of bloody fighting. Eventually, the horrific event came to an end when Sherman's Army entered and took control of Atlanta after Hood and his forces fled the city. On September 8, 1864, Sherman ordered that Atlanta be evcuated, and he eventually destroyed the entire city.

1) The fighting during the Battle of Atlanta was intense, bloody and featured some of the most gruesome hand to hand fighting of the Civil War. It was a horrendous scene and took many lives, and that's also one of the reasons why it's become so significant.
2) General Sherman was a very ntelligent man, and that is one of the reasons why is army did so well in battle. During the Battle of Atlanta, General Sherman massed 20 artillery cannon and different Artillery weapons arranged around his headquarters and used them very effectively to shell the Confederate soldiers.
3) On September 2nd, 1864 a day or two after Confederate General Hood had pulled his forces out of Atlanta in the final days of August, a group of Atlanta Citizens met the Union Army outside of Atlanta and informed them that Atlanta
was theirs, and officially surrendered the city to Union Forces.

This battle is known for its strategic and military significance and also its large political significance. This battle aided the support of Presidnet Lincoln during his second reelection.
